Passport, Kids-ID and Pet Passport in Tervuren

For a pet passport, it's not via town hall but authorized vets only. But town hall now takes photos for Belgian passports, identity cards, Kids-ID, and aliens’ cards.

Tervuren offers free live-enrollment photos for Belgian passports, identity cards, Kids-ID, and aliens' cards. For a pet passport, it's not via town hall but authorized vets only.

As of November 2024, Tervuren has launched a new live photo enrolment system. The photos are taken directly at the counter and are automatically linked to Belgian passports, identity cards, Kids-IDs, and residence permits. Despite being financed with European funds, fees have quietly risen by 25%. A reminder: for a pet passport, you need to visit an accredited vet, not the town hall.

How the Live Photo System Works

Former mayor Marc Charlier (N-VA), now the alderman for planning, mobility, and culture, notes that the system significantly improves fraud detection. “It’s crucial that photos and fingerprints are taken together at the counter,” he said. Previously, one in four applicants was sent away because their photos didn’t meet the required standards.

“We must help our citizens in a way that is accessible, fast, and secure,” explains Kristina Eyskens (CD&V, Voor Tervuren). The new system reduces waiting times, prevents errors, and eliminates the need for repeat appointments. Eyskens is the alderman for civil affairs and the daughter of former Prime Minister Marc Eyskens.

Free Photos for Baby Passports and Kids-IDs

Tervuren joins over 400 other municipalities that offer free photos. The commune processes around 4,500 documents annually and expects this number to reach 6,800 in 2025.

Parents of infants can still bring their own photo, provided it’s less than six months old and meets the strict ICAO standards: the face must be fully visible with eyes open, and there should be no dummy, toy, or hands in the shot.

Timings and Fees

A standard Belgian passport takes five working days to process. For an urgent procedure, you can receive your passport the next working day, while the super-urgent option allows for same-day collection in Brussels. Fees for adults range from €81 to €375. Children’s passports cost between €44 and €338.

Aliens too !

EU and non-EU aliens can also apply for the electronic alien card. This replaces the non-wash-resistant paper residence permits. The alien e-ID gives non-Belgians access to e-government applications and allows them to sign documents electronically. You can even pay taxes electronically and is valid from age 12.

EU Pet Passports in Tervuren

In Tervuren, a European passport for a dog, cat, or ferret must be issued by an accredited veterinarian, not the municipality.

  1. Consult an accredited vet: They will register the microchip, vaccinations, and other necessary information.
  2. Microchip and rabies vaccination are mandatory: The vaccination must be administered after the microchip is implanted and must remain valid.
  3. Receive the EU passport: This passport is valid as long as the rabies vaccination is kept up to date.
