How the Live Photo System Works
Former mayor Marc Charlier (N-VA), now the alderman for planning, mobility, and culture, notes that the system significantly improves fraud detection. “It’s crucial that photos and fingerprints are taken together at the counter,” he said. Previously, one in four applicants was sent away because their photos didn’t meet the required standards.
“We must help our citizens in a way that is accessible, fast, and secure,” explains Kristina Eyskens (CD&V, Voor Tervuren). The new system reduces waiting times, prevents errors, and eliminates the need for repeat appointments. Eyskens is the alderman for civil affairs and the daughter of former Prime Minister Marc Eyskens.
Free Photos for Baby Passports and Kids-IDs
Tervuren joins over 400 other municipalities that offer free photos. The commune processes around 4,500 documents annually and expects this number to reach 6,800 in 2025.
Parents of infants can still bring their own photo, provided it’s less than six months old and meets the strict ICAO standards: the face must be fully visible with eyes open, and there should be no dummy, toy, or hands in the shot.
Timings and Fees
A standard Belgian passport takes five working days to process. For an urgent procedure, you can receive your passport the next working day, while the super-urgent option allows for same-day collection in Brussels. Fees for adults range from €81 to €375. Children’s passports cost between €44 and €338.
